Born in St. John, New Brunswick on October 21st, 1938, son of the late Emma Jane Hamilton (Johnston) and of the late Matthew Payne.
He worked for the Canadian National Railway (CNR) for 36 years as a Car-man and as a crane operator for the train auxilliary team until his retirement at age 53. Dad was an avid Tiger’s Fan, being a season ticket holder. He rarely missed a game and was happy to attend and cheer for the Boys. He loved camping especially when travelling to a blue-grass festival. A long time love affair was fishing in his canoe on our glorious Restigouche River. He knew every secret fishing hole! His faith was an important pillar in his life. He was a consistent church-goer and a prayer warrior, praying for his family often. His Bible was well read and falling apart. His hope was in the Lord. He especially loved a good Chinese Food Buffet! If he could save a nickel, he would, but if he had to spend a dollar to help someone out, he would gladly, unnoticed.
He is survived by his wife Judith Evelyne Irvine Johnston, his 4 daughters, Cindy Kaye Burelle (Gary), Wendy Jane Ray (Craig), Shelly Ruth Johnston and Kilby Dawn Perron (Jean Paul), his 10 grandchildren, Jeremy (Canel), Aaron, Chelsea (Dominic), Alexander, Joshua, William, Samuel, Isaac, Kyle and Tyler, 1 great-grandson, Jordan and 2 new great grandchildren on the way, this fall, his sisters, Karen, Myrna and Joan of Ontario, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at Living Hope, Church of God in Dalhousie Junction, NB, on September 21st, 2021 at 11:00 am.
The family would like to thank the Campbellton Regional Hospital, 4th floor medical and nursing staff, the Palliative Care nursing staff and Dr. W Charbonneau for their wonderful and attentive care during this difficult family time.
