It is with sadness that the family of the late Stella Milroy announces her passing at the Campbell River and District Hospital on April 22nd 2011. Stella was pre-deceased by her parents, Reginald Edwin Horsfield and Doris Horsfield nee Sparling.
Stella will be forever loved and missed by her spouse John Brian Milroy, CD, Lt. Col. (Ret’d) her children Colin Milroy and his wife E. Marcie Keast-Milroy and Peter Edward Milroy and his wife Janice Fittler her grand-children Derek Benjamin Milroy and Kira Allison Milroy and her sisters Elizabeth Shenton and Pat Bennett her brother and sister in law Neil Norman Milroy and Janet Milroy and special friends who attended the Ladies of the Church Alter Guild, Anglican Church Women and the Tuesday morning Bible study group.
Stella was born in 1928 in Sheffield, England and was brought up in Stoke-on-Trent during WWII. The war left an indelible impression on her life, from the way the family hunched in front of the radio listening to the 9pm news, to rationing and learning what “bartering” was all about, to how home makers eked out meals with what little they had. Gas Masks were taken everywhere, any school child who forgot it was immediately sent home.
Stella volunteered at the hospital in Stoke-on-Trent, and then decided that nursing was to be her career. She did four years training at Kings College Hospital, London, England, one year Midwifery training, followed by two years Midwifery practice. Stella immigrated to Canada in 1954, spent seven years at the Ottawa Civic Hospital and then four years as a Nursing sister in the Royal Canadian Navy. After marrying Brian in 1965, Stella practiced nursing at Belleville General Hospital, Belleville, Ontario until retiring in 1984.
Stella was an active member of the following organizations and clubs:
Argyll Chapter IODE for over 25 years
Belleview District Boy Scouts for over 20 years.
Alter Guild, ACW and Vestry Council St. Thomas Anglican Church, Belleville, Ontario.
Alter Guild, ACW of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Campbell River, BC
Stella loved to Bowl and play Golf and Bridge and Cribbage with friends. She loved live theatre, classical music, reading and knitting.
Funeral Services for the late Stella Milroy to be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, 228 South Dogwood Street, Campbell River, BC on Wednesday April 22nd 2011 at 1:00pm with the Rev. Dr. Blair Haggart officiating. A Reception will be held following the service in the Parish Hall.
Cremation followed by interment in Belleville, Ontario. If friends so desire donations may be made to St. Peter’s Anglican Church or the Campbell River & District Hospital Foundation, Campbell River, V9W 3V1
