It is with much sadness, that we share the news of the passing of our dad, Martin. Those who knew him experienced his dedication to his wife and family. He was an amazing father to us three kids, and an exceptional role model for hard work.
Martin originally immigrated from his home country of Holland in 1953 and came to Campbell River in 1954. In 1963 he went to Alberta to meet his ‘pen-pal’ from Holland… our mom, who was visiting her brother. They soon fell in love and were married later that same year, but because Maria was very homesick, they went back to the Netherlands for a time.
In 1966, Martin and Maria once again came to Canada, this time with their toddler, Marcel. They immigrated, and after a very short time in Prince George they settled in Campbell River, where their young family grew with the addition of Helen and Laurens. In 1968, Martin and Maria began to construct their family home on Alder Street and raise their three kids there.
Martin worked his entire career at the mill until retirement in the mid 1990’s. Those who knew him there, knew him as the ‘Chemical Unloader’. He made many friends at his job and always looked forward to the chemical barge arriving… because they made the best clam chowder for lunch.
Martin is survived by his three children, Marcel (Patty) Van Zeeland, Helen (Casey) Brown, and Laurens Van Zeeland. Five grandchildren, Megan, Luke, Michelle (Shawn), Jamie, and Jack, and two great-grandchildren, Tieva and Briggs.
We would like to extend our most sincere thanks to Martin’s doctors, Dr. Joda, Dr. Meckin, and Dr. Carswell, as well as the many care-aids and nurses who helped him stay comfortable in his last few weeks at home.
Our greatest appreciation, however, goes to our wonderful Jessica B., who tirelessly cared for our dad at his home for the past year. We can’t thank you enough for the kindness and grace you showed towards our dad in his time of struggles. He truly loved you. Thank you, Jessica, you are an amazing woman. xo
In Lieu of flowers and cards, simply please extend kindness to a neighbour (anyone). Dad would have liked that.
