It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the sudden, but peaceful passing of our father John. John was predeceased by his beloved wife Dianne in 2014. He is survived by his three children, Russell, Grant (Val) and Joanne (El).
He is also survived by his wonderful Sheltie, Bear, whom he loved deeply. The people that knew Dad described him as a strong, vibrant, meticulous man. He always had a lot of business savvy.
Mom and Dad first met in Merritt of 1960, where they then moved to Vancouver, then to Prince George, and he spent the last 30 years living in Campbell River. Dad was an excellent business man. He first started his career as a banking clerk at the Bank of Montreal in Merritt.
He then worked for the airlines in Vancouver before moving to Prince George where he owned and operated two Marlin Travel Agencies and one in Mackenzie, BC. when they made the move to Campbell River, Dad opened and operated Marlin Travel down here and then Mom and Dad purchased and operated Nite Time News in Willow Point for a number of years.
Dad was held up at gunpoint by someone wearing a gorilla suit, but Dad being Dad was completely unfazed. He just calmly gave the money over so he wouldn’t endanger himself. Dad was and will always be our hero for many, many reasons.
Dad was also a long standing member of the Rotary Club both in Prince George and Campbell River. At one time he was also the president of the club. He was very involved in the Rotary Auction for many years, whether it was getting donations, answering phones, or greeting people when they came in to get their auctions items. Our Dad was very much a people person.
When he left Rotary, they made him an honorary lifetime member. He also volunteered at Restore in Campbell River. Wherever Dad could give his help, he did.
No service will be held in Campbell River. Service will be held in Merritt, BC at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation.
