Caroline Jennie Hansen passed peacefully at North Island Hospital in Campbell River, British Columbia with an ocean view, on June 8th, 2023 surrounded by her children and grandson.
She went to be with her husband of 30 years, Arnold “Dick” daCosta, who passed in April. They were soul mates, travel partners and best friends. Now they are together once more.
Caroline is survived by her children Karen Hansen (Jeff), Steven Hansen (Shannon), Michael Brazier (Karin) and step-daughter Stephanie daCosta (Manon) and step-son David daCosta. She is lovingly remembered by her sister-in-law Lynn Hansen (Keith), niece Alise Hansen and great niece Ainslee. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Matthew Kelly, Andrew Hansen, Dakota Cowper, Gabe Dyke, Alyssa Barlow, Nicole Coppaway, Joe daCosta, Dylan daCosta, and David daCosta as well as her great grandchildren Khala, Caeleb, Rowan, Isaac, Gavin, Sophia, Ella and Anthony.
She will be fondly remembered by her daCosta in-laws, the Hansen and Chambers cousins in Ontario and Denmark, and her BFF’s daughter, Cathy Morgan.
Caroline is predeceased by her husband Arnold daCosta, step-son Andrew daCosta, and brother Keith Hansen.
Caroline was born in Eldorado, Ontario to Jack Hansen and Alice Chambers. She earned her university degree from Western University as an adult and was a serious scholar of psychology, theology and English.
She began her career as a secretary for Bowes and Cocks Realtors in Lindsay. Then moved on to be the personal assistant to Dr. Lucy Duncan at the Sarnia Health Unit. She then took on the role as Executive Officer at the Sarnia-Lambton Real Estate Board and retired from there after several years of dedicated service.
In their retirement, Caroline and Dick settled lakeside near Peterborough, where she cultivated a beautiful garden in which many family and friends held weddings.
She lent her skills and talents as a volunteer to the communities she lived in and was a charter member of the Rotary Sarnia Breakfast Club and later was part of the Bridgenorth-Ennismore-Lakefield Rotary Club. She practiced Tai-Chi and volunteered as an audio reader for Trent University.
Caroline had a life-long passion for writing, reading, religion, personal wellness and genealogy. She traced all branches of the family tree and lovingly documented her research for the family.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband and they ventured to many places and enjoyed many cruises together.
For the past six years of her life, Caroline battled the impact of Pompe Disease with grace and dignity; finding the positive and humorous side to every challenge.
A Celebration of Caroline’s life will take place on July 29th.
