Good bye old friend. It is with great sadness that we send our final message to all of Al's family. We first met in 1964 and went through basic training together and on to trades training  as very young members of the RCAF. We were roommates in RCAF  Station Zweibruecken,  Germany (3 fighter wing). Our careers crossed many times throughout the next 35 years. Al was a true friend who was always ready to help out. Stand easy Al and you will remain in our hearts forever. Harvey, Helga and Tina.

Marj I am so sorry to hear about Al . I just sent you guys congratulations  on your anniversary.  I remember when we met Al when he came to Cold Lake  to work for Mo at the bomb dump. We had a lot of laughs  in those days .I remember when he got his Harly and drove it up to our place for us to see.. He called me after Mo passed away to make sure I knew of all the things I was intitled to . He was a great friend and will be missed by many. Prayers to all of you . RIP Al

I am so sorry to hear of Al's passing. I only knew him a short time but I felt like I had know him all my life. He was so warm and welcoming, and he impressed me as  a man who truly loved life. When I think of him, I think of  that twinkle in his eye when he teased the people he loved.   This is a great loss- he was a great man. Marj we were shocked and saddened to hear of Al's sudden passing and send our deepest condolences to you and all the family. 
I met Al in 1983 when I was posted to the EOD school at CFB Borden and had the pleasure of working with him for 4 years. Al was a great mentor, teacher and most importantly a great friend the part I value and remember the most.
The memories that stick out the most are the pranks and jokes that we played on each other or any poor sot that happen handy and the after work bike rides that seemed to end up at the Allison Dairy Queen.
I know that most Harley drivers would not want to be seen riding  with what he called Jap scrap bikes however being who he was we were allowed to tag along as long as we kept a proper distance well behind.

I can remember meeting Al in Angus, as a teenager in Ontario when he and dad were in Borden with the EOD. Not often I saw a man big like my dad, but even bigger was his smile and sense of humor. Al and Marjorie were dear friends of my mom and dad, Norman and Wendy Herd. Mom always would be excited to spend time with them. After her death Al and Marjorie would look in on my dad, even my sister Karen and I when we would visit. My first drink of moonshine was with Al, dad, my siblings, around a picnic table at the farm...I will never stop missing Al and all that he and Marjorie have meant to my family. 

Marj ...I was so sad to hear of Al's sudden passing. My condolences to you and all your family. He was one of the best huggers in the world ...when Al hugged you you could feel it for sure! I wish Dad could understand that he won't visit anymore and I will miss our coffee dates at the nursing home ...including you! :)  Take care of you and your family and maybe we will see you sometime when I am there.

Marjorie, I was saddened to hear of the passing of your dear husband and father to your children.  Al was one of the instructors at C.F.B. Borden who instructed myself and other O.P.P. Divers in the E.D.U. Course over 30 years ago.  We have stayed in touch since that time and I valued his friendship.  Please accept our condolences in your loss.

Al was a great friend to have. The first time we met was when he was posted to Cold Lake in 1980. I was the coach for the broomball team and one of our players mentioned that there was a new guy just posted in who wanted to play. I , reluctantly, agreed to at least talk to him. When I saw this guy walking around the arena, all I could think of was how big he was. When I realized it was him, I asked if he had brought his equipment with him to the arena as I would love to put him in play immediately! Ever since then, we have shared many things with our families and co-workers in Cold lake and Borden. Snowballs, beer calls, bbq's,  Sturgis, and many weekend bike rides throughout Ontario. Al, since I've known you, you've been many things to me. A brother, a father figure but always my friend. I will miss you dearly.
   Tuesday night bike night will never be the same again, we will carry it on in your honour and I will ensure there is a drink on the table for you.

Memories so many but one in particular stands out for me ,oh they were many others believe me.!
It was a late summer day and I had to go to the Canex [Cold Lake] for milk, well Al had the Harley out and said I will give you a ride, humm, anyway wasn't too keen on doing that but he insisted. Well we were all in the back yard and on the damn bike I got and around to the front of the house we went, well there happen to be a hose on the sidewalk which somehow once the front tire hit it , we sled and ended up in the window well. My left knee was never the same again, not seriously hurt ! just proved my point I should of walked!! I met Al just after I came back to Cold Lake from a funeral back east and life was never the same after that , he was a kind, compassionate, fun loving man who loved his family very much. It was a honor to have known him and the memories will stay with us forever. Kris & Carol

I was saddened to learn of Al's death.  He was a man who enjoyed life and lived it well.  Always a smile & made you feel important to his life.

It was an honour and a great privilege to have know Al and called him a friend. From the days of Bagotville playing broomball and softball on the Armourer's team, to the long days of mass loads and snags in 6 hangar. To Cold Lake and beyond, and finally Borden in the early to mid 80's. He was always the consummate professional and could always be trusted to call it as it was. 
He will now be watching over his beloved family, his Armourer family and his EOD brothers and sisters from the big range up in the sky.  Load Complete, Rest easy.

Dear Marjorie and Family,
 My prayers and sincerest heartfelt condolences are with you and your family.

I was truly blessed having met Al and his family during my posting to the EOD School in Borden from 85-89. I continue to have wonderful memories of the family BBQs, Golf tournaments, and Poker Runs. He was like a big brother to me.

I would like to share a short story. For anyone that knew Al they know he loved his Harley. On one Friday afternoon I was talked into taking some used motor oil and putting a few drops under the engine when it was parked at the school. He was not a happy man when he came back to work Monday morning saying he had spent his entire weekend looking for the leak. When he found out it was me I thought my life and career were over. Al being Al took it in stride. Thank you Al!!

I continued to stay in touch with Al after his retirement from the CF, whether he was working overseas in countries such as Afghanistan  clearing unexploded bombs or right here at home doing the same. He was very passionate about protecting people and passing on his knowledge so they could protect themselves.

He so loved life, his family and his career. May you all find peace and comfort in the comings days. He has left us all with warm wonderful memories. I will forever miss my big brother.

Dear Marjorie and family,

I was deeply shocked to learn of Al's passing. He was a great friend to me when we both served at the CFEOD School, CFB Borden, Ontario 1983-85, and we have remained in contact ever since. Al was a very professional and proud man who loved his work, but most of all, his family. He will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him. A true character of life, who would help anyone in need. I will certainly miss the telephone chats with him and his great sense of humour. My heartfelt condolences and my thoughts are with you and your family at this time of sorrow.

To say big Al's sudden passing is a shock....is an understatement.

Al and Marj, the late George Knight (and I ) shared many years of friendship, fun and laughter...enjoying rides on the guys motorbikes and having a beer. I am sure that is just what they are doing right now!
