Ron was born in Calgary to parents Reata and Stan Johnston, and remained in the city his entire life.
Ron attended Stanley Jones Elementary School. He met his high school sweetheart Dorthea while both were attending Western Canada High School. The two were married on June 5, 1954, and remained inseparable for the following 69 years.
He began working in Banff over the summer in high school for Rocky Mountain Tours, continuing a lifelong passion for the mountains and the outdoors. Upon graduating, he worked 38 years at Texaco/ Imperial Oil before retiring in 1990.
Ron took great enjoyment in his retirement, and spent his time doing exactly what he loved — hunting, fishing, travelling, gardening, volunteering within his community, and supporting the Flames and Stampeders.
Ron was a people person to young and old alike, he knew no strangers. He always made time to chat, and help out where needed. He volunteered at Triwood Community for many years, and campaigned for many charities.
Ron’s greatest joy came from his ever-changing role as the family grew. Along with many extended family and friends, Ron is survived by the love of his life, his wife Dorthea, his children Don (Glenda), Dean (Lori), and David, his grandchildren Gary Gurr (Tracy), Kyle Johnston (Kailee), and Brandon Weber (Justin), and his great-grandchildren Hudson, Parker, and Claire Weber.
Ron’s legacy and love will live on through each of them.
A Celebration of Ron’s Life will be held at the Charleswood Hall of Triwood Community Association, 2244 Chicoutimi Dr. NW, Calgary, AB on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, if you wish a donation can be made to Stars Air Ambulance at https://stars.ca/ in Ron’s name.
