Vicki was born on September 20, 1947 in Bengough, Saskatchewan as the fourth of five children to Maurice and Lorraine Conroy and grew up in Viceroy, Sask. She met the love of her life at a dance in Glasnevin, Saskatchewan. She was the “third wheel” at the dance with her older brother Wayne and his girlfriend, now wife, Gloria when this handsome guitar player from the band asked her to dance. Of course her brother was very encouraging to her of this opportunity! This dance to Johnny Murray lasted for the next 56 years. They were married on July 29, 1967 in Horizon, Sask.
Vicki worked as a telephone operator, the old switchboard and cable style, in Viceroy until she and John married and made their home in Regina where they started their family and welcomed two daughters, Lorelei and Michelle. John and Vicki moved the family to Calgary, Alberta in 1972 then to Strathmore, Alberta in 1977. Vicki was an extraordinary mother and homemaker, raising her girls to be strong, independent women. She was the Family Sunshine and pillar of comfort and love of our home.
Vicki or “Slim” as John affectionately called her, had always been a woman of strength, perseverance and positivity with a little bit of sass and mischief. From the 8yr old girl climbing onto an outhouse roof to throw shingles at boys walking by; to the mamma bear that soaped the windows one Halloween of a neighbour that refused to hand out candy to children. She was feisty but with a Heart of Gold.
Vicki was the epitome of strength and positivity to the end. It didn’t matter what bump in the road of life that she was overcoming, she always persevered with a smile on her face and never wanted to burden others with the hurdles she was enduring. She could be up to her waist in mud or on her last days on this earth, she would say “it could be worse” and “I’m doing great”.
Vicki was a true participator and was up for any activity. She enjoyed music, dancing, playing cards and cherished her time with family. She was an avid sewer, crocheted many afghans and doilies, ceramics, flower gardens and the all popular 1980’s rock garden. She was the best grandma, and was always there to help, whether it be picking sick kids up from daycare or being the first, second and fifth customer at their lemonade stands.
Vicki left a legacy of love and sunshine. Vicki is survived by her loving daughters Lorelei Haberl (Mike) and Michelle Connors (Kent); grandchildren, Mitchell Haberl (Ally), Chelsea Haberl (Kurtis), Sean Connors (Briana) and Shelby Connors (Conner). Great grandchildren, Olivia Haberl and Kayden Connors. Her sisters Gayle Shenher, Donna Lix (Mervin), Jackie Lalonde, her brother Wayne Conroy (Gloria), sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Maurice and Lorraine Conroy, brother-in-law Kerry Lalonde, brother-in-law Bernard Shenher, and her beloved husband John Murray.
There will be no memorial service as per Vicki’s wishes. Her ashes will be placed at the cemetery in Horizon, Saskatchewan with John. They both decided “It’s where we started our life together, and it will be our final resting place together”.
The circle of life is never long enough to those left behind … this in not goodbye mom, but see ya later.
