Tine Sarah Haworth

Tine was a remarkable woman, educator, entrepreneur, pilot, philanthropist, champion Bridge player and mother.

She was predeceased by her husband Roy in 1951, her husband Derek in 2008, her son David in 2019 as well her parents and siblings.

She is survived by her children Audrey Voice, Jim Voice, Elaine Tanton and son-in-law Steve Tanton.

She was born on a farm near Macrorie Saskatchewan to Dutch immigrant parents in 1922.

An accomplished student, after high school she attended university to become a teacher and taught all grades in a one room school.

In 1944 she married Roy voice of Bradwell Saskatchewan and subsequently moved to Edmonton. In 1950 Roy died of polio and Tine at age 28 found herself a widowed stay at home housewife with two small children and no income. Using proceeds of a life insurance policy she bought two rooming houses to provide income for the family.

In 1955 she married Dr. Derek Haworth and they moved to the small town of Cupar Saskatchewan where he established a medical practice. She had two more children with Derek. Tine did the books for the practice and continued to work her investment real estate business. The Edmonton houses were sold and they started buying apartment buildings in Regina and over the years expanded to properties in Saskatoon, Medicine Hat and Calgary. With good management a significant real estate portfolio was established. They always maintained the properties to a high degree and treated her tenants and employees with the utmost of respect.

She was a significant philanthropic supporter of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute at the University of Calgary. Her donations help fund research into heart disease and provided scholarships for the cardiovascular physicians of tomorrow.

She was an incredibly supporting and non-interfering mother who valued family and longtime friends.

Amazingly, in her 90’s, she communicated with friends and family by email and managed her own stock portfolio via an online trading account. One of her last statements was, “how did the market do today?” Her returns consistently beat those of professional advisors.

In an era where women were afforded few leadership opportunities she was an inspirational role model. Living life on her own terms was her guiding principle.

The family would like to thank the individual caregivers employed by Nurse Next Door for the amazing 24/7 care they provided her in her final years.

A Celebration of Life will be held at in the River Room at the Valley Ridge Golf Course, (11618 Valley Ridge Park NW), on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at 3:30 p.m.
