Roy was born in Cambridge, Jamaica and spent much of his youth in Kingston. The youngest of five he attended Kingston College, an all-boys private school. He found his way to Montreal, Canada (a city he loved) where he attended McGill University. A quietly humble yet brilliant man Roy studied at McGill Medical School graduating first in his class while specializing in Pediatrics.
With the family in tow, Roy settled in Calgary. A valuable member of the community he was responsible for establishing Pediatrics at Foothills Hospital where he was Chief of Pediatrics. In addition, Roy also taught many a student at the University of Calgary Medical School. He worked with a variety of hospitals around Calgary where he, without doubt, accomplished great things but was far too humble to wish to mention them. Gentle and decent with an unerring and elegant sartorial sense would best describe Roy. His other passions included all things sports related and he was a keen fan of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team and CFL Football. Roy was also an avid reader who would engage you with his brilliant mind.
Roy’s service to the community is immeasurable as generations of children found his care and this positively impacted the lives of countless families who entrusted their children’s health to him. He often helped many a neighbour after hours when they had concerns with the health of their children. To this day he is remembered with great fondness in the community.
The last couple of months of his life Roy spent at Foothills Hospital and Agape Hospice. A very special thank you to the staff at both of these places. In addition special thank you to Bryan Smith for his ongoing friendship and support of Roy over the years.
Roy is survived by his son Jason. He was predeceased by his wife Elsa, daughter Shauna, his mother and father, his sisters Joyce, Hazel, Ina and brother Vivian.
Due to current events no funeral will be held at this time but a “Celebration of Life” will happen at a later date in 2021. For those wishing to make donations in Roy’s memory choose a charity of your choice. He had an obvious affinity for the welfare of children and animals so charities in that realm would be to Roy’s liking.
My father will be greatly missed.
May you have a beautiful return, King.
