May 12, 1914 – November 23, 2012
Philip Heistad went home to be with his Lord and Saviour on November 23, 2012 at the age of 98. He was born on May 12, 1914 in Dorenlee, AB to Theodore and Johanna Heistad who emigrated from Norway. He lived in Veteran, AB, until 1970 when he moved to Calgary. Philip married Esther (Christianson) on December 23, 1938. Together they farmed in the Veteran area until 1955 when they purchased a general store. Philip always kept busy; running the store, driving the school bus, raising livestock and was an active member of the Veteran Full Gospel Church and Veteran Camp. They moved to Calgary in 1970. Together, Philip and Esther managed an apartment complex until they bought a house in Lakeview. Philip worked at Atco until he retired. He filled his retirement with family trips, camping, carpentry and visits with friends. Philip was a dedicated, patient and loving family man who lived every aspect of his life with integrity. His love for the Lord was evident in everything that he did. He will be remembered fondly for his quick sense of humour, creativity, carpentry skills, and affectionate ways. He was a friend to all, and often reminded his family that “A stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet”. He will be lovingly remembered by Esther (Christianson), his faithful and loving wife of 74 years. He is also survived by three children: Deanna (Allan) Graham, Tom (Rosemarie) Heistad, Darlene (Allan) Buchanan; eight grandchildren: Jeanette (Drew) Godsman, Tim (Diana) Graham, Sheila (Curt) Scarlett, Angela (Doran) Wells, Scott (Lauren) Heistad, Michael Bidzinski, Jackie (Darius) Wilson, Kurt (Naomi) Buchanan; and twelve great grandchildren: Janelle, Tyler, Carter, Rachel, Dawson, Makenna, Katrina, Christopher, Ella, Cole, Grace and Lily. He also leaves to mourn, his sister Judith (Hugh) Wallace and brother-in-law Ted Christianson. Philip was predeceased by his siblings; Oscar (Elizabeth) Heistad, Joseph (Hedwig) Heistad, Henry (Deborah) Heistad, Minnie (George) Lindberg, Benjamin (Christine) Heistad and Conrad Heistad. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Foster's Garden Chapel, 3220-4th Street N.W., Calgary, AB. Interment to follow at Veteran Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations may be made directly to a charity of one's choice.
