It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Mary Maureen (Shirley) Wanvig in Calgary, Alberta on Tuesday, November 12th, 2024. Maureen was lovingly surrounded by her family in her last days.
Maureen was born and raised on a farm in Cormac, Ontario. At the age of 18 she moved to Ottawa where she worked as a secretary for the Government of Canada. There she met and married Lawrence Wayne Wanvig. Soon after, they moved to Calgary and started a family. Maureen waited until all her children were raised before starting her career at the CNIB. After she retired at the age of 65, she continued to volunteer for the CNIB for many years.
Her family was her life, and her passion was sports! She loved watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren play hockey, baseball, basketball, gymnastics, and volleyball. She was known as Gramma everywhere she went!
She is survived by her sons Rory (Jacqueline), Kirk (Teralee), Kelly, Brent (Lorraine), Shawn (Henriette), and her daughter Erin; her grandchildren Jason (Janine), Stephanie (Kevin), Cole (Kathryn), Celine, Ryan, Heather Murchie (Brent), Chelsea (Alejandro), Josh, David, Cody (Patricia), Rory, Kyle (Leah), Brianne Pooley (Scott), Ben (Catherine), Adam (Nicole), Amy Gustavsen (Torren), Cullen, and Steven; and her great-grandchildren Ava, Nolan, Colton, Braeden, Riley, Oliver, Scarlett, William, Jack, George, Euphemia, Theodore, Victoria, Halle, Dylan, Lincoln, Peyton, Archer, Berkley, Charlotte, and Martin. Maureen is also survived by her sister Therese Nuttall. Maureen was predeceased by her parents Patrick and Bridget, her sisters Agnes and Evelyn, her brother Patrick, her husband Lawrence (Larry), her daughter Kathleen Louise, and her grandson Matthew.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 4 Street NW, Calgary, (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, December 6th, 2024, at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, Maureen has requested donations to her favourite charities which include Diabetes Canada at their website https://www.diabetes.ca/ and Muscular Dystrophy Canada at their website https://muscle.ca/
