Born in Horschikowitz, Czechoslovakia on September 12, 1940, Lillian lost her father Josef at an early age due to an accident when he was returning home after the war. Her mother Pauline was left to raise Lillian and her two older siblings - brother Bill and sister Marianne. In 1945 the family was forced out of Czechoslovakia as displaced persons and shipped to Germany in cattle cars. In 1948 they were sponsored to emigrate to Canada and arrived first in Tupper Creek, B.C. Mother Pauline, Lillian and brother Bill settled with family on a farm in Toms Lake while older sister Marianne, went to Edmonton.
Lillian grew up as a tom boy and loved the farming life. In 1956 however, she moved to Dawson Creek to attend High School and after graduation, she began her training in the healthcare field. Calgary, Alberta was soon calling to her and in 1959 she made the move. Soon afterwards she met her husband, Eugene Edel. They wed in February of 1961 and were married for over 63 years.
Lillian spent her career as an LPN, working at both the General Hospital and Peter Lougheed Hospital. She retired in 2000 and was always busy and active in her retirement. Due to her love for animals, she even volunteered at The Calgary Zoo.
Lillian is survived by her husband Eugene, son Richard, brother Bill and sister Marianne.
Lillian was an unwavering pillar of support and a source of great joy in her son’s and daughter-in-law’s lives. Her family was always her priority. She was kind, unbelievably generous, adventurous and had a wonderful sense of humour. Lillian is very dearly missed by all who knew her.
