He was born in 1937 to Alf and Cora Cogger. He has a twin sister, Lorraine Kellett of Regina, brother, Gordon (Iris) of Winnipeg, and sister, Joan (Vern Erickson) of Kelowna. Leroy grew up in McBride, BC, and Saskatoon, SK, and attended Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon and the University of Saskatchewan where he obtained his Ph.D. in Physics. He was employed by Cornell University to continue his research for three years in Puerto Rico. Leroy joined the faculty of the University of Calgary Physics Department in 1971 and remained there as a professor until retirement when he was appointed Director of the Institute for Space Research. Following his retirement, Leroy and Marilyn enjoyed winters on Vancouver Island and summers in Calgary and Elkford, BC, where he enjoyed fly fishing. Leroy had a heart for the poor, and was instrumental in establishing a relationship between Calgary friends and the Good Samaritans in Tuticorin (Thoothukudi), India.
His family deeply appreciate the excellent care given by Dr. Jeremy deBruyn and Dr. Annie Yau.
A Memorial Service will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Thursday, October 27, 2022 at 2:00 PM. Masks are preferred.
