Kurt was born on September 27, 1929 in Santen, Latvia to parents Johann and Kasilde Oelke. He lived and worked on farms in Latvia, Poland and Germany during the war and earned his Gardening Apprenticeship while in Germany. Kurt came to Calgary in 1954 and worked for the City of Calgary Parks Department for 35 years until his retirement in 1989. He loved singing and directing the choir at Thornhill Baptist Church as well as fishing and travelling with his wife Ingrid. He loved God and his family and was grateful for all of God’s grace in his life.
Kurt is lovingly remembered by his wife Ingrid Elfriede Oelke, and sons Garry, Don, and Harvey Oelke and their families, which include 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters and predeceased by a brother and two sisters, all in Germany.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at a visitation held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Sunday, November 28, 2021 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. The City of Calgary Vaccine Passport is required.
A Private Celebration of Life service will be held at Thornhill Baptist Church, 128 Tache Ave. NW Calgary on Monday, November 29, 2021 at 1:00 p.m., by invitation only, with Pastors Ryan Thacker and Sieg Koslowski officiating. A live stream of the service will be available at: https://www.thornhillbaptistchurch.com.
A Graveside Interment, for family and close friends only, will precede the Celebration of Life service.
