December 17, 1919 – July 16, 2012
Betty passed away peacefully at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary, at the age of 92 years. She was born in Corby Craigs, Ayershire, Scotland and at a young age the family sailed across the ocean to Canada. After spending time in Beverley, AB, her family settled in the Crowsnest Pass, where her father supported his family as a coal miner. Betty’s favorite activity as a young girl was to go camping with her family. When she was a little older, her and her friends would walk from one town to another to enjoy an evening of dancing and then walk home again afterwards. When Betty moved to Calgary she met and married Malvin Lund. They had two children and one on the way when her young husband was killed in action during the Second World War. As there was no financial aid she was left to fend for herself and her children. She would stay up late at night and knit socks, scarves and mitts and take them to the store and trade them for groceries. Betty had many jobs in her lifetime but her favorite and the one she took the most pride in was her position as the Registered Mail Clerk for Canada Post. Many of her co-workers became friends long after she retired. Betty retired from Canada Post at the age of sixty-one and took a long awaited trip back to Scotland and then on to Ireland and Wales. She spoke of family members she had met, the great pubs and the green grass in Ireland for years afterwards and also how she never again wanted to see another castle. Before Betty succumbed to dementia a few years ago, she enjoyed spending time with her friends playing bingo, darts, shuffleboard, cribbage, taking short trips and creating poetry. She enjoyed large family gatherings with lots of good food and games afterwards. Betty was a straight forward, fun loving, generous, intelligent woman with a sense of the importance of family and community and she will be sadly missed. She leaves to mourn her children, Dorothy Head, George Lund (Elisabeth), and Beverly Postill (Graeme); grandchildren, Kathy Carter (Kelly), Anna-Marie Harty, Richard Lund, Chad Lund (Janine), Christine Dann, Barry Postill (Susan), Trevor Postill (Karen), Dwayne Postill; and thirteen great grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Malvin Lund, father Robert Kerr, mother Elizabeth Kerr, sisters Isabella Randahl and Margaret Vysohlid, special friend Pete Rempel, son-in-law Jim Head and grandson-in-law Cam Hunter. Those wishing to pay their respects did so at visitation held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, July 20, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Service was held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Calgary Health Trust – Rockyview Unit 94, 7007 – 14 Street S.W., Calgary, AB T2V 1P9.
