Beloved husband, father, and grandfather Dick Ling Yick Wong passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 23, 2024, in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 92 years after a second bout of pneumonia. He was born on April 3, 1932, in Hoyping, Kwangtung China.
When an opportunity was presented to Dick to leave China to build a better life in Canada, he did not hesitate. In 1963, he married his wife Emmie Kwai Tai Chan in Vancouver, BC. They moved to Swift Current, Saskatchewan where they would build a family together. Dick was a very hardworking individual and wanted to have a great life for his family. When he arrived in Canada, he worked at various restaurants in Swift Current to learn the art of cooking. His true love for cooking began to show when he and his cousins, Willie Wong, and Lloyd Wong, would open a family restaurant named Wong’s Kitchen in Swift Current. Nicknamed “Shorty” in the community, Dick was known for his love of hockey, particularly the Swift Current Broncos. After working at the restaurant, Dick would catch the last period cheering on the Broncos before heading home. His love of sports, particularly hockey, carried onto his children. Up until his final days, his children enjoyed watching hockey and baseball with him.
Nothing was more important to Dick than his wife and children. He was a hardworking, loyal, dedicated man who wanted the best for his family. Often considered a homebody, he was a quiet and soft-spoken man who loved spending time with his grandchildren. He may have been small in stature, but he was strong. He will be remembered for carrying large racks of meat with one arm in the kitchen at Wong’s Kitchen. Not only was he great with the cleaver, but he was also the go-to person for all sewing needs. When he retired, he would walk the house with his hands behind his back, the exact slow walking pace that would be mimicked by his grandsons in the years to follow.
He will be deeply missed by his three children; son Dennis and his wife Chiyoko; grandchildren Devon and Koneko, son Daniel and his wife Kiyomi; grandchildren Emiko and Koji, and daughter Teresa and her husband Rob; grandson Kai. Dick is predeceased by his wife Emmie.
A Graveside Service will be held at Queen’s Park cemetery on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at 2:00 pm. Those wishing to attend, please meet at the cemetery entrance at 1:45 p.m.
