Beth M. Logan passed away at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, AB on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at the age of 92 years. At mid-day, Beth simply went to sleep, full of joy after seeing family members with her newest great grandson, and other grandchildren on preceding evenings. She had enjoyed relatively good health through her 91st year, but age and diabetic complications slowly caught up with her. Beth was ready to let go of life's earthly bonds and go to be with her husband, Bruce. She leaves behind her children, Murray (Dolores), Judy (Rick), Robert (Lynn), and Gordon; 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren of whom she was very fond. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Bruce (2011); daughter, Barbara (2000); brothers, Gordon and Bert and parents, Cecil Murray Force and Helen Mary (nee Spiers) Force. Beth was born in Forget, SK where she grew up with her two older brothers. She attended a one room public school and attended high school at the local Catholic convent. She enjoyed playing baseball as a girl. Her father was a grain buyer and her mother was a schoolteacher. Beth graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Regina General Hospital in 1943, then was Head of the Operating Room for three years. She met her future husband, Bruce, at the RGH when he came in to have surgery. This was the beginning of a life-long romance. When Bruce returned from WWII and overseas service in the RCAF, they were married on August 21, 1946 at her parents’ home in Corinne, SK. Beth continued in her RN career until the arrival of her first child and though she never returned to the nursing profession due to the necessities of motherhood, her heart was always with her fellow alumni with whom she maintained close contact throughout her life. They moved from Saskatchewan to Calgary in 1950 for Bruce to pursue employment opportunities and bought a house on 2 Street N.W. where they lived for over 50 years. Beth and Bruce had five children. Family was always important. Beth loved the church. They were strong, active members of Northminster United Church. They were also strong supportive members of the community. They were founding members of Highland Swingers Square Dance Club and had the opportunity of dancing at the opening ceremonies of the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Beth led by example and was the organizer of the Ladies Sewing Circle, Bridge Club and Friendly Neighbours on 2nd Street. She loved participating in community charity activities such as Meals on Wheels for 20 years as well as mentoring people of all ages. Beth was always a small town girl at heart who raised her family in the city. Every Christmas Eve, she and Bruce welcomed family and many neighbours into their home. They were inseparable as a couple and always maintained ties with Saskatchewan. They took their children on camping road trips every summer through the western provinces, Vancouver Island, Expo 67 in Montreal and later to Disneyland. After the children left home, Beth and Bruce continued their travels to the Arctic Circle and the Gulf of Mexico by camper van; then on to Europe, Australia and New Zealand, adding a Caribbean cruise and finally a tour to China where they were the oldest travellers to walk the Great Wall. In 2002, they moved from their house to a private senior’s residence, then on to the Colonel Belcher. When Bruce died in 2011, Beth continued to stay in the Colonel Belcher until her health determined that she move to the Bethany Calgary Central Point in June 2013 to receive greater care. The staff at Colonel Belcher expressed their fondness for her kind and gentle demeanour. The family would like to express their great thankfulness to the very helpful and caring staff of Carewest Colonel Belcher, Bethany Calgary Central Point and the good people of Northminster United Church. A Service of Remembrance for Beth, our mom, grandma, great gramma and faithful friend will be held at Northminster United Church, 3311 Centre St N.W., Calgary, AB on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the ALS Society of Alberta, 250, 4723 1 Street S.W., Calgary, AB T2G 4Y8. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
