It is with deepest sorrow that Audrey Krueger (our Nana) passed away peacefully on April 19, 2021 in her residence in Calgary, Alberta. Audrey is survived by two children Darrel Erickson (Judy) and Sandy Ferris (Rick), and daughter-in-law Paulette Erickson. She was predeceased by her youngest son Leslie Erickson. She has a full team of grandchildren: Michael Ferris (Ivanna), Bobby Ferris (Kristine), Melanie Harris, Carrie Erickson (Trevor), Warren Erickson, and Tanya Sera (Mark). Her biggest fans were her 15 great-grandchildren from all over Alberta and the Yukon. Nana was also loved by a large group of extended family and friends.
Audrey was born in Wadena, Saskatchewan in 1925 where she lived an exciting farm life with her siblings Amy, Angus, Art, and Doug. She was known for her wicked baseball arm and collection of freckles. Audrey married Bill Erickson in 1947. After a couple years on the farm, they moved with their young son Darrel to Flin Flon, Manitoba. They lived in the mining town for 10 years adding Sandra and Les to their clan. During this time, Audrey was a mainstay on the Creighton Ladies Softball Team.
In 1960, the family moved to Thompson, Manitoba. Audrey was busy raising her three children while working at the Simpson Sears Catalog Store. During her years in Thompson Audrey became an active member of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. They enjoyed a busy life of sports and friends in Northern Manitoba.
In 1974, Audrey married Norman Krueger and moved to Fort McMurray, Alberta, another booming mining town. She worked for Syncrude for many years and enjoyed the frequent visits from her children and grandchildren. Their time in Fort McMurray was cherished by many friends, hunting, and enjoying the outdoors. It was in Fort McMurray where Nana’s beloved Friskey entered her life. This little short haired terrier was Nana’s companion for years to come. After Norman’s death Audrey retired and moved to Airdrie, and later Calgary. Both of these locations were favorite meeting spots for Audrey’s family from Westlock, Medicine Hat, and Calgary. Nana was known for her fabulous cooking and baking, in particular her cinnamon buns and Spudnuts available only at Christmas. She spent time teaching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren the Spudnut tradition - it will be one that is carried on for years to come. If you were fortunate enough to try one of Nana’s Spudnuts (even frozen), you were very lucky!
Audrey spent her last years at Swan Evergreen Village in Calgary, Alberta. She made many friends and always appreciated her care and how the staff treated her. Her family is thankful for the respect and care that Nana was provided in her final days.
Audrey will be missed by her family and friends. She will be remembered for her extreme love and kindness to all. So many people that have crossed paths with our Nana have fond memories and experiences of the friendship and support she has provided. You may have even enjoyed a “splash” on her deck or around her table.
A service will be held in the summer when her family and friends can gather safely. In her memory, donations can be made to the Salvation Army Calgary, (https://salvationarmy.ca/donations/).
