Jerry married Bonnie (LaFave) August 6, 1954 and they had just celebrated 67 years of marriage. Gerald is survived by his wife, Bonnie; children Wayne Waddell and Rebecca (Michael) Weber; grandchildren Jordan Waddell, Nolan (Rachel) Waddell, Brianne Waddell, Matthew Weber, Adam Weber; great-grandchild, Mia Waddell; siblings Noreen Fockler, Marcia (James) Ratering; Bonnie's siblings who were like brothers and sisters Robert (Beverly) LaFave, RuthAnn (David) Miling, Sharon (Roger) Miller, Judith Masters, Linda LaFave, Jerry Lee (Barbara) LaFave, Michael LaFave, Douglas (Lori) LaFave, Deborah LaFave; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jerry began his teaching and coaching career in Hermansville, Michigan. In 1961, they moved to Byron Center, Michigan where Jerry began teaching at Byron Center High School. Over the years, he coached baseball, basketball (with the highlight season of 20-0) and football. He was also the athletic director for fifteen years and founded the Byron Center Athletic Booster Club. The BCHS football field is named in his honor. He taught for a total of 38 years. He has enjoyed his retirement years traveling, gardening, and enjoying time with his family. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones and the Byron Center community.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, August 27, 2021 at Cook Funeral Home in Byron Center, 2067 84th St., Byron Center, Michigan. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 2021 Rush Creek Bible Church, 2334 76th St. SW, Byron Center, with visitation from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
