Clare was the only child of Milo and Dorothy Slotman. He grew up on his family farm in Byron Center where he learned to love the outdoors, hunting, and gardening. He loved singing and dancing and was an accomplished saxophonist. Clare graduated from Byron Center High School in 1956. After high school, he obtained his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Western Michigan University. He went on to earn his master’s degree in education from Michigan State University. Clare’s love of education led him to continue his studies at The University of Houston and The Catholic University of America. He dedicated his career to teaching math in the Byron Center Public Schools where he retired after 36 years of service. Clare was passionate about his students and inspired them by singing math jingles and staging chalkboard problem-solving competitions. He served as a baseball coach and was a class sponsor. He had a quick wit and a special regard for the students who needed extra attention. Students celebrated annually with him on his summer birthday.
His wife, Mary, was the love of his life. They married at a young age and built a beautiful life together. They were rarely apart and often seen walking hand-in-hand. His family was his pride and joy. He loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and activities and was always their biggest cheerleader.
Clare’s loving spirit is carried on by his devoted wife of 64 years, Mary; their three children Mary, Clare Jr. (Kim), and Sherri (David); nine grandchildren Rachael and Matthew (Meghan) Slotman; Cassandra, Corbin, Nicolas, and Jacob Holwerda; and Fiona, Alessandra, and Victoria Spitzley. He enjoyed the added blessing of two great-granddaughters Sloane and Sutton Slotman.
