Richard grew up in Odessa, TX and graduated from Odessa High School in 1965. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1968 during the Vietnam War. He served 2 tours in Vietnam and earned several medals of Honor in the 4 years of service to his country. He was a proud Vietnam vet and he loved his country deeply.
April 19, 1978 was the greatest day ever for Richard, his precious baby girl was born, Sonja Lowery. Sonja was his pride and joy and that relationship was two sided. Richard was also Sonja’s pride and joy and her rock. Richard was her prayer partner for any little or big thing that life threw their way.
In the summer of 1984, Richard started his 22-year career with the United States Postal Service in Austin. He transferred to Burnet in 1985. He was a route carrier until his retirement in 2008.
Richard was the friendliest mailman that always had a candy for the kids and his route customers. He was loved by all.
He was very faithful visiting and helping out all of his friends daily at the Oaks Nursing Home. All the patients loved seeing him walk through the doors. He was a blessing to them and they were a blessing to him. He was a helping hand to so many in the Burnet community.
He loved the Burnet Bulldogs and hardly missed a game with his best friend Jerry Hutson. They were also super fans of the Texas Longhorns. They had the opportunity to attend several Texas Longhorn games.
He was an active member at The First Assembly of God Church in Burnet. He was a godly man and loved the Lord with all his heart.
Richard is survived by his precious daughter Sonja Lowery of Midland, sister Jackie Jones and husband Ronnie of Odessa, nephew Michael Munguia of Midland, niece Jaclyn Kemp of Odessa, great nephews Mason and Morgan Munguia, great niece Hannah Bell Wade, stepson Werner Sternitzke of Dublin, stepdaughter Renee Clady of New Carlisle, IN and many cousins. Last but not least, his precious dogs (the boys) Cody and Jody.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents J.J. and Dimples Lowery, sister Judie Munguia and his lovely wife, whom he loved dearly Alice Lowery.
A family visitation will be held at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Burnet on Wednesday September 22, 2021 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday September 24, 2021 at 10:00 am at the First Assembly of God Church. Graveside service will follow immediately at Post Mountain Cemetery.
