Joe P. Wilson, 75, died January 24, 2012, at home in Leander, Texas.
Mr. Wilson was born October 6, 1936, in San Antonio, Texas, the devoted son of J.V. “Pinky” and Irma (Edney) Wilson.
Joe could accomplish anything he set his mind to do. At an early age, he began helping his father on their ranch located close to Florence, Texas.
Mr. Wilson attended Bertram High School and graduated from Burnet High School, lettering in football. He continued his education at Texas A&M University, graduating in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science and in 1964, completing his Master of Education. He was a true Aggie through and through. Joe bled Maroon.
Mr. Wilson served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1960 during which time he trained in Japan as a Judo instructor. His interests included all sports, especially football, baseball, basketball, and golf. Joe loved to play games and was extremely competitive.
He spent more than 30 years in Gainesville, Texas, working for Cooke County College/North Central College as a physical education teacher, athletic director and women’s volleyball coach. Coach Wilson took great pride in the fact that under his leadership the Lady Lions Varsity Volleyball Team had six straight winning seasons since its establishment in 1985. In 1991, the Cooke County College Lady Lions went to the Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament in Florida, earning a final ranking of seventh in the nation and a Resolution of Commendation from the Cooke County College Board of Trustees.
Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Robbin Wilson; Daughters: Deby Brandos and Dana Stupka; Sons: Scott Walterscheid and Brian Wilson; Step-daughter: Cassandra Coffey; Step-sons: Dan Coffey, Matthew Coffey and William Coffey; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and Mother-in-law: Enid Slinzak.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. the Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Burnet, Texas, on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 by Rev. Rodney McGee.
