Burnet, Texas. Dorothy was born in Hargis, Louisiana, on February 10, 1932, to Charles
and Mertice Lewis and had three older brothers, Jim, Leonard, and Kenneth, and two
older sisters, Loreese and Mertice.
Dorothy went by many names, such as Dot and Penny, but her most cherished name
was Gamy, as her beloved grandchildren affectionately knew her. Her family continued
to grow as she became not only a great-grandmother but also a
great-great-grandmother who gave her the name GG!
As a young lady, Penny was active in sports, including basketball, swimming, and
skating. She was popular in high school and loved by all her classmates. Penny met her
future husband, Gerald Starks, in high school. She said it was "love at first sight" for
both of them; however, Gerald was in the Merchant Marines and was away a great deal.
On November 19, 1950, Gerald and Penny were married in her brother and
sister-in-laws Leonard and Mary Lewis' home. Penny said it was the happiest day of her
life!
Gerald and Penny raised three children, Vicki, Pete, and Veda, in Angleton, Texas.
Gerald coached little league, and Penny was "Mom" to all of her kids' friends. Penny
worked as a liaison between patients and administration in a nursing home for many
years. She loved caring for the patients and treated each of them like family.
Penny and Gerald were married for 43 years before Gerald went to be with our Lord in
1987.
Penny would eventually return to Angleton for a few years but decided she
wanted to be nearer to family and moved to Burnet, in 2011. She had a little
place on Vicki and her husband Sam's land. Her son Pete also moved to the ranch in
2013. She loved having coffee every morning with Pete and then would have a second
cup when Vicki would come over for their morning chat. And if Veda was visiting, she
would have that coffee flowing all day! She enjoyed her old western movies and
watching Jeopardy with Vicki every afternoon.
She loved having visitors and especially loved when her grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, and her great-great-grandchildren would come to visit! Although,
you better bring a box of chocolates when you stop in for a visit, as that was her
weakness!
Penny was a beloved member of the Northside Baptist Church in Burnet.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mertice Lewis of Louisiana,
and her husband, Gerald. Dorothy is survived by her children, Vicki Starks-McLeod, and
her husband, Sam, Pete Starks, Veda Starks-Haines, and her husband, Ed. Surviving
grandchildren Dale, Richard, Rachel R., Rachel L., Jay, Nicki, Will, and Brandon.
Great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Morgan, Jackson, Cameron, Sydney, Avery, Mia, Adam,
Garrett, Emmett, Amelia, Logan, Eligh, Charlotte, Remy, and Juliette.
Great-great-grandchildren, Graham, Griffin, Grayson, Norah, and Ellie.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 24, at 1:00 P.M. at Northside Baptist
Church at 103 Shady Grove Rd, Burnet, TX 78611. A graveside service for family and friends officiated by Pastor Dowen Johnson will be held Saturday, February 25 at 1:00 P.M. at Garden Park Cemetery in Conroe, where she will be laid to rest by the love of her life, Gerald.

GOD'S GARDEN
God looked around his garden and found an empty place.
He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful; He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering; He knew that you were in pain.
He saw the road was getting rough, and the hills were hard to climb.
So He closed your weary eyelids and whispered, "Peace be thine."
It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone...for part of us went with you the
day God called you home.
