He was born to Elmer Melvin and Rubye “Hopkins” Bird at Shady Grove, Burnet County, Texas on February 22, 1938. Buddy was married to Frances Leoma (Box) Schmidt in 1959 and Donna (Lantzer) Brigner in 1995.
Buddy enjoyed ranch work, building fences and working with his dozer, building stock tanks and roads. He was a Master boot maker. His boots were as colorful as he was!
He loved grilling outdoors for a crowd of hungry people, dancing and visiting with friends at his nephew’s Cadillac Ranch dance hall, hunting, fishing and visiting with everyone he knew everywhere he went!
Buddy was an ordained deacon in the Buchanan West Baptist church. He was also a member and an Elder in the Buchanan Dam Cross & Spurs Cowboy Church. He dearly loved the Lord and his church, and the church loved him.
Buddy is preceded in death by his wives, sister Lois Shell, brothers in law, Fred Shell, Wilford Wilson, Bud Tate, Melvin Case, Gerald Boring and sister in law, Carol “Allen” Bird.
Survivors include his life-long step-sons Donny Schmidt and wife Rhoda and Larry Schmidt and wife Janet; sisters Lola Case, Frances Tate Boring and Lila Wilson; brother Wade Bird; grandchildren Phillip Schmidt (Kim), Amber Moran (Jay) and Amanda Schmidt; step grandchildren, Luke Reagor, Zach Reagor (Codi). Also survived by many and much loved nephews, nieces & great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, May 11 from 5-7 PM at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Burnet. The funeral service will then be held Friday, May 12 at 10 AM in the Cross & Spurs Cowboy Church of Buchanan Dam conducted by Pastor Johnny Sawyer.
Internment at Shady Grove cemetery will follow at 2 PM. Pallbearers are his brothers in Christ from his Church.
When asked what his favorite scripture is, he replied Romans 3:23-24, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus."
