Robert, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, died at the age of 97 at Laurel Place Hospice in Surrey, B.C. on October 28, 2021.
Robert was born in Hong Kong on July 12, 1924, 7th of 11 children, to Dr. Yeung Shiu Chuen and Lo Shuk Yin. When he had a life-threatening illness at the age of 3, his father pleaded and bartered with God to let his son live, promising that he will dedicate his son to do God’s work if he lives. Robert survived and kept his father’s promise to God. Even though he lost his mother at the age of 7 and his father at 26, he continued to strive to fulfill his father’s promise to God.
Shortly after the Battle of Hong Kong (December 1941), Robert met Marie who became his lifelong partner for 68 years after marrying in 1953. Together they built a successful optical business until they immigrated to Canada with their young family in 1966, leaving everything behind in Hong Kong.
In a new country, in an unfamiliar language, he studied theology at the Anglican Theological College (ATC) located on the University of British Columbia campus. He was ordained in 1970. He served at: St. Faith’s Anglican Church, Vancouver; St. Michael’s Anglican Church, Surrey; and Mission to Seamen, Vancouver. In 1983, he was called back to Hong Kong to serve as Vicar at St. Paul’s Anglican Church where he had attended as a youngster, where he was married and their children were baptized. After completing his 4-year assignment, he returned to Canada where he served 2 years at St. John’s Anglican Church, Toronto and then 2 years at Church of the Good Shepherd, Vancouver.
Robert was predeceased by his father and mother; sisters Lily (#1), Precious (#3), Gloria (#5), Doreen (#6), Alice (#9), and Nora (#10); and brothers William (#2) and Yu Cheung (#8).
Robert is survived by his: wife Marie Yau Tim (Pong); sister Diana (#4); brothers Lincoln (#11) and Philip (#12), daughters Jillian (Roland) and Joan (Paschal); son William (Jenny); grandchildren Lisa-Marie (Cody), Lillian (Robert), Leah (David), Michelle, Nicholas, Krystle (Alphil), Kaitlyn (Daniel), Karlene; great grandchildren Ethan, Liam, Joshua, Amaya, Lyla, Micah, and Zachary.
He will be deeply missed by all his friends and family. We are confident in God’s love and promises. As Robert was faithful to his father’s promise to God, how much more faithful will God be to keep His promise to us! “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9
