Mr. Kim Tim Louie

KIM TIM LOUIE

January 15, 1913 – November 17, 2010

Peacefully after a brief stay at Vancouver General Hospital. Beloved father of Joanne (Hugh), Russell (Ruby) and Douglas; grandfather of Julian, Ryan, Daryl and Riley; uncle and grand uncle to many nieces and nephews, Tim left us serenely and at peace with the world, surrounded by family and friends. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Pearl, brothers Tong, Ernest, William, John, Quan, Edward and Kenneth and is survived by sisters Helen Lim and Beatrice DeLane (Gerald), brother Willis (Maye) and sister-in-law May Sung. Tim was the eldest son of Hok Yat Louie who died while traveling on business in Asia in 1934, leaving Tim as head of the family at the tender age of 21 to see to the education and development of ten siblings and to guide the growth of the family wholesale grocery business in the teeth of the Great Depression. Despite the harsh economic times and the challenges of well-established competitors, H. Y. Louie Company steadily grew with Tim at the helm until 1964 when he handed it over to his brothers. As a family business located on East Georgia Street, he recognized the importance of being a civic leader within Vancouver’s Chinatown, while encouraging the development of organizations and relationships that would enhance the opportunities for Vancouver’s Chinese in the broader community. His strong sense of civic duty and zest for life led him to forge wide ranging and lifelong interests in the community and in business, locally and abroad. He was a charter member of the Vancouver Chinatown Lion’s Club, President of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Vancouver, a founding member of Simon Fraser University, founding member of S.U.C.C.E.S.S., active in the Vancouver Board of Trade, Board Chairman of Mount St. Joseph’s Hospital for 25 years, Member of the Vancouver Police Board and a Canadian Citizenship Court Judge. He was a long time member of the Downtown and South Slope YMCAs and attended regularly well into his 90’s. The family extends its heartfelt thanks to the staff of Crofton Manor, Vancouver for their kindness and support.

At Tim’s request, a private service was held at the Ocean View Funeral Home November 27, 2010. In memory, donations can be made to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver, 2874 St George Street, Vancouver B. C. V5T 3R8.
