Dr. Kent Wing Kin Chan

Kent was born on February 11, 1947, in Hong Kong. He was the third son of his father, who worked as a Chinese calligrapher making signs around the city, and his mother, who sold sweet soups on the sidewalks. He had three brothers and one sister, who are now living around the world in Toronto, Wales, England, and Hong Kong.

Kent left Hong Kong as a young man to pursue his Doctor of Medicine degree at the National Defense Medical Center of Taiwan. After graduating in 1973, he worked at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, where he met his wife, Carol. They were married in 1978. In 1983, he became the Department Director of Otolaryngology at Taichung Veterans General Hospital until 1988. Then, he opened his own otolaryngology clinic in Taipei.

After 25 years of practicing as a specialist, he hung up his coat to retire, and so in 1998, he moved to Vancouver with Carol and their son, Carven. During his retirement, Kent pursued the hobbies he hadn’t had time for before, including cooking Cantonese cuisine, woodworking, hiking, and traveling. Since 2009, he joined a group of ping pong enthusiasts at Living Word Baptist Church. Table tennis was his favourite sport and exercise, and he found many new friends through this church community.

Unfortunately, in 2016, he was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a rare, non-typical form of Parkinson’s disease. His health deteriorated in the past nine months, and he passed away on January 21, 2024 at home in Richmond. He left behind a dearly loved family.
