March 18, 1950 – July 30, 2023
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Helen Lorraine Phillips on July 30, 2023, at the age of 73, due to Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in Vancouver on March 18, 1950 to Lillian and Albert Phillips, Helen grew up in the Champlain Heights area of Vancouver. She loved school and enjoyed learning, so it was no surprise that she chose teaching as a career. She taught in the Howe Sound School District for 33 years at Stawamus and Valleycliffe Elementary schools, and is fondly remembered by students, parents and colleagues as an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher.
After her retirement in 2005, Helen redirected her focus to her many interests - gardening, playing bridge, traveling, going to the theatre with friends, going for walks, and watching her beloved Blue Jays and Canucks.
Helen’s greatest passion was her family. She was a devoted daughter, loyal sister, and adoring aunt and great-aunt. Her home was full of photos of her entire family. She especially enjoyed engaging with two generations of young nieces and nephews and always had a smile for them.
Helen moved to Hamilton Village Care Centre in 2020 where her doting brother Murray visited regularly, bringing her news and pictures of her family and the occasional Buddy Burger, mocha or milkshake.
Helen leaves behind Murray, Mary Lou, Jessica, Mike, Travis, Nick, Cooper, Wyatt, Brooklyn, Brady, Harlyn and many friends who will miss her smiling face.
Love you forever.
Thank you to the staff at Hamilton Village for their care and compassion for Helen during the past three years.
