After a courageous but brief battle with cancer, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Dragica Hleb, passed away on September 28, 2024, just days after her 79th birthday.
Dragica was born in Žumberak, Croatia to the late Štefica and Franjo Novosel. Growing up in a small town with her mother and brothers Steve and late Tomo, Dragica learned the value of hard work and resilience from an early age, as their father had tragically passed away in World War II just before she was born, leaving them to navigate life together with love and determination.
Her journey led her to Zagreb, where she worked in a textile factory, stamping and stenciling beautiful fabrics. It was there she met the love of her life, Antun.
In 1971, seeking new opportunities, Dragica, Antun, and their young son, Tony, immigrated to Vancouver, joining her brother Steve, sister-in-law Jelka, and their mother, Štefica. Together, they created a warm and welcoming home filled with love and laughter.
Dragica’s unwavering kindness, grace, and selflessness remained her hallmarks until the very end. She raised two wonderful children, Tony and Kristina, instilling in them the values of independence and compassion. As a grandmother, she found her greatest joy in caring for Brianna, embracing her role as Baka with boundless love and warmth.
A woman of remarkable strength and determination, Dragica approached every task—big or small—with a positive attitude that inspired all who knew her. Her energy was limitless, and she tackled life’s challenges head-on.
Dragica was renowned for her generosity, her delicious baking, and her incredible personality. She was truly the heart and soul of our family, and her absence will be profoundly felt by all who loved her.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 3105 East 1st Avenue, Vancouver on Tuesday, October 8th at 11am PT, followed by the burial at Ocean View Cemetery - South Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the BC Cancer Foundation.
Dragica, you will forever be missed and cherished in our hearts.
