Dr. Chuan-Wei (CW) Chao

We are deeply saddened to announce that Dr. Chuan-Wei Chao, 97, passed away peacefully at the Good Samaritan Delta View Care Centre in Delta, BC. He was born in Jiading, Jiangsu Province, China. He is survived by Judy, his loving wife of 62 years; daughter, Carol (John); son, David (Eileen); son, William (Yolanda); grandchildren: Nicholas; Alysha; Amanda; and Andrea. He was predeceased by his parents and 12 older siblings.

Dr. Chao attended Tong De Medical College (Shanghai, China); went to Taiwan in 1949 to finish medical school at Tai Da University School of Medicine (Taipei, Taiwan), specializing in tuberculosis. Afterwards, he went to the US for five years to complete his residency and internship at various hospitals. He returned to Taiwan in 1958 to get married and became the Director of Taiwan Tuberculosis Control Bureau (Taipei, Taiwan) while working concurrently as an Associate Professor at the Medical School for National Taiwan University School of Medicine (Taipei, Taiwan).

In 1966 he was invited to attend the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA), where he received his degree in Master of Public Health. Prior to settling in Vancouver BC, he completed a fellowship with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Europe (UK and Norway) and South East Asia (Japan, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong). He was also a Tuberculosis Consultant for the WHO in West Samoa in 1970 for a year before returning to Taiwan again. After being offered a job in Vancouver BC, Dr. Chao immigrated to Canada from Taiwan in 1972, followed by his family in 1973. He was the Head of the Vancouver Willow Chest Clinic until his retirement in 1988. He was so passionate about his job that he returned to work part time for a few more years until 1993, when he became a proud grandfather.

During his career, he travelled to many cities, towns and countries to provide medical care and research. His integrity, work ethic, dedication, and compassion for his work and patients speak volumes about his character. He was a loving husband, caring father, respected father-in-law, proud grandfather, loyal friend, trusted colleague and compassionate doctor. He will be missed dearly by everyone who knew him.
