Our dear Dad, Alfred Gordon Coombes "Al," after living a full good life of 84 years, passed away early Friday morning (June 28, 2013). Al was born in Vancouver on December 24, 1928. Al was predeceased by his loving wife Vera in 1978. He will be deeply missed by his younger brothers Blake, Tom, and Lester; son Robert; son Ronald, grandchildren Aaron and Cody; son Donald, grandson Chad; and daughter Donna May Wallin, grandchildren Jessica and Jay; great- grandchildren Maxwell and Kesler; and many cousins, nephews and nieces. Al served Canada oversees during the Korean War and is the last survivor of the Greenhill Park maritime disaster of 1945 in Vancouver. Al was a proud employee of Lafarge Canada (driving transit mixers) for over three decades. During Al's career at Lafarge, he was a passionate and proudly a long-time member of Teamsters local 31 and later local 213. Al will be missed by his long-time friend and companion Francis Winfield. Dad enjoyed sailing and teaching others, being a certified sailing instructor and as well, he loved to swim and build scaled model aircraft which he flew at Fry's corner in Surrey. Our family would like to thank the staff at Burnaby General Hospital and George Derby (lower North) retirement home, Korean Veterans and Veteran Affairs for all of the efforts and loving care. Dad's celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. this Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Ocean View Funeral Home. In addition, a viewing will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. this Friday, July 5.
