A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 28 at Memorial Funeral Chapel 1515 S. College Ave. in Bryan from 4:30pm until 6:30pm. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 29 at 11:00am at the funeral home. Immediately following the service, friends and family are invited for a fellowship meal at the funeral home. Interment will conclude at Reliance Cemetery in Brazos County.
Lowell was one of five sons born to Alva Monroe and Julia Mathis Holligan. He was a member of the Stephen F. Austin high school class of 1949, where he was a punter on the Bronco football team. He served in the United States Navy at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi during the Korean conflict, where he would meet his future bride, Mary Ann. Lowell retired after 30 years working at Texas A&M University in the mechanical and other college of engineering departments, then returned part-time for a few additional years after his retirement.
Lowell had many interests including music, traveling, raising cattle, farm work and tinkering in his shop. He enjoyed pulling the RV on the Central Baptist group road trips to Colorado and Wyoming and other places. His main joy was entertaining himself playing the guitar for hours on end. He was a founding member of The Medicare Jam Band at Jack Kindt’s barn in Steep Hollow, and a member of Sigal Rosier’s group, The Boys from Mathis Creek. He was a long time faithful member of Central Baptist Church (Central), where he served in many positions, including teaching Sunday School, committee member and deacon.
Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Johnny; his brothers, Byron, Gene, Jerry and Wayne; numerous brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law.
Surviving Lowell are his wife of 69 years, Mary Ann; a son, David; a sister-in-law, Judy Holligan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
