Cora Matthews, 80, of Bryan, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2010. Visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 8, at Memorial Funeral Chapel. Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Smetana Cemetery. Cora was born on December 24, 1929 in New Baden, Texas to Tommie and Minnie Ferguson. She attended public school and later worked for B.I.S.D. for 27 years. She married Joe Reynolds and had two children. She later married Ollie Matthews who had two sons and they had two sons together. Cora was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She raised her children before she had a career outside the home. Cora will be remembered for her laughter and the way she cooked her meals for everybody that came by the home. She never seemed to be able to sit down for very long because something always needed to be done, and she never met a stranger. She is preceded in death her parents; husband, Ollie Matthews; her only daughter, Bessie Lee Reynolds Cochran; brothers, Tommie Ferguson, A.L. Ferguson, Andy Ferguson; her boys Ronnie Matthews and Clifford Matthews.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Dorothy Matthews of Houston, Lonnie Matthews of Bryan, Edd and Aline Reynolds of Bryan, Melvin and Georgia Matthews of Bryan, David Matthews of Somerville; her boy D.W. “Waylon” Matthews of Bryan; sisters Adeline Puckett of Franklin, Emma Sue Everett of Bryan and Kay “Rachel” Johnson of Franklin; Seven grandsons; four granddaughters; and numerous great-grandchildren.
God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be, so he put his arms around you, and whispered come to me. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, he only takes the best.
