Bill was a newspaper journalist for much of his life, working as a reporter and then editor for the Augusta, Ga. Chronicle, the Chattanooga Times and the Roanoke Times & World-News, where he retired as the paper’s managing editor. A graduate of the University of Georgia, Bill was the recipient of many journalism awards, but his favorite part of his job was mentoring journalists. Among the many journalists he inspired is his own daughter.
Bill also served in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a major. In Hawaii in the late 1960s, he served as a Public Information Officer working with the Apollo program. He was among the staff escorting the astronauts of Apollo 13 back to dry land after splashing down in the Pacific. His son, Bill, followed his father into the Air Force.
Bill was proudest of his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy; his daughter Wendy Warren and her husband Daniel Robinson; his son Bill Warren and his wife Virginia Warren, and his beloved granddaughters, Sarah Robinson, Lydia Warren and Miriam Warren.
On St. Simons, Bill was an active member of the Rotary Club and loved golfing.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home, 3321 Glynn Avenue in Brunswick, Ga.
