A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at College Place United Methodist Church with Pastor Rob Grotheer officiating. A visitation will be held Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A private burial will be held at a later date.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the Co-Ed Sunday School Class, the College Place Chancel Choir, and members of Local 177 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union.
Mr. Holmes was a native of the township of Barbecue in Sanford, North Carolina, but had resided in Brunswick, Georgia his adult life. He was a United States Army Air Corp veteran and served his country honorably during World War II. He was privileged to participate in the recent Coastal Georgia Honor Flight for the veterans of WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a retired field engineer in the piping industry having worked with various companies throughout the southeast and overseas. He was a member of Local 177 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters for over 50 years. After his retirement he continued working part time with several local car dealers in the car transport business as well as volunteering at the local hospital.
He was a member of College Place United Methodist Church. He spent many joyous years in the Chancel Choir and was a member of the Co-ed Sunday School Class. His church activities also included Discipleship Classes, mission trips, and driving the church bus. His wife Sue took great pleasure in coordinating the “Happy Travelers” fellowship group of the church and he was the official bus driver for their many adventures.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed watching many sporting events however his true love was golf. He could often be found on the local golf courses with family and friends. He would not hesitate to teach a beginner. His favorite local course was Oleander on Jekyll Island.
Mr. Holmes was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lillian and Thomas N. Holmes; a son, John B. Holmes; a brother, T.N. Holmes Jr.. He is survived by his loving wife Sue B. Holmes; two daughters, Doris Jones ( Rick) and Beth Cain (Andy); Two sons, David and Thomas Holmes; four grand-children, Chris Jones, Shanna Giles (Robert), Stephen Cain, and Sarah Crosby (Stephen); two great grand – children, Candice Cain and Drew Giles. Two Brothers, Joe Holmes (Shirley) and Lotes Holmes (Ima) both of North Carolina. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the many medical staff members in our community who skillfully and lovingly provided such wonderful care for Mr. Holmes. These include many doctors and nurses of Southeast Georgia Health System, SICU staff, Senior Care Center, DaVita Dialysis staff Scranton Rd. location, Advantage Home Healthcare, and Okefenokee EMS. A special thanks to Drs. Ted and Emily Feely , Dr. William Grubb, and Dr. Mitchell Jones for their excellent and compassionate care over the years.
Memorial Contributions can be made in his memory to College Place United Methodist Church in care of the Chancel Choir.
