Roy Lawson Smith, 83, passed away at his home on St. Simons Island, GA on November 24, 2016. Mr. Smith was born to Alexander and Eloise Smith and grew up in Pawcatuck, CT where he graduated from Stonington High School. Roy continued his later education, attending the University of Connecticut where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree and following, attended Boston University where he attained his Doctor of Law degree. Mr. Smith was commissioned an officer in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Major while serving in the Judge Advocate General Corps for 12 Years. Attorney Smith returned to southeastern Connecticut where he established his private law practice and served as a public defender for the State of Connecticut. He was a member of the American Bar Association, Freemasons, Masonic Coastal Lodge #57 and the Scottish Rite, Valley of Norwich.
Roy loved music all throughout his life and at a young age studied piano and organ. He also enjoyed his hobbies of collecting model trains, stamps, and coins. Above all else was his faith in God and the love he had for his family.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his daughter, Lorin Piacenza and niece, Pamela Lema French. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Marjorie D. Smith of Saint Simons Island, GA; two sons, Steven C. Smith of Saint Simons Island, GA, and Scott A. Smith of Bolton, CT; sister Ann Lema of Palm Coast, FL; son-in-law, Stephen Piacenza; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two nephews.
A memorial service to honor Mr. Smith's life will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, December 10, 2016 at St. Simons Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bob Brearley and Rev. Alan Dyer officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his honor to either the St. Simons Presbyterian Church or the Brunswick, GA Cancer Society.
