Robert L. Smith

Robert Lee Smith, 77, of St. Marys, GA passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at Magnolia Manor of St. Simons Island. A memorial service was held at 4 pm Saturday, March 19, 2011 at St. Marys United Methodist Church with Reverend Dale Thornton officiating.

Mr. Smith was a native of Soperton, GA and was born November 7, 1933 to the late Morris Hinton and Clyde Johnson Smith. He was a former resident of Atlanta, GA and had resided in St. Marys for sixteen years. He graduated Soperton High School in 1950. In 1963 he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Mercer University in Macon, GA. Mr. Smith began his 43 year career at AGL Resources/Atlanta Gas Light Co. as a Meter Reader and retired in 1995 as Purchasing Manager. He was a member of the St. Marys United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees and a member of the Guale Historical Society. He was an avid golfer who was a long-time member of the Osprey Cove Men's Golf Association.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joyce Smith of St. Marys; two children Kevin Smith (Carla) of Marietta, GA; Allison Warbington (Ken) of Social Circle, GA; granddaughter Michelle Warbington of Statesboro, GA; sister Murl Thigpen of Eatonton, GA and many nieces and nephews.
