Richard was born April 1, 1916 in Bridgeport, Connecticut to the late Hiram Franklin Pope and the late Helen May Brann. He served in the Navy during WWII, and retired from National Union of Elevator Contractors. Richard moved from Lawrenceville, Georgia to St. Simons Island in l989. He attended a Tuesday morning Men's Bible Study at SSUMC and a Wednesday morning Island Men's Bible Study at SS Presbyterian Church. Richard was a former member of St. Simons United Methodist and most recently a member of The Chapel, and was a devout believer. He enjoyed carpentry projects, and had a keen wit and an outstanding memory. Richard loved his family and kept up with each member.
In addition to Richard’s parents he is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Cordella Crystal Taylor Pope, and several siblings.
Survivors include his loving wife of 12 years, Martha Tanner Pope, his daughter Judith Sue Wilson, his son Richard Franklin Pope, Jr., his step-children are Gay Bluestein (Ronnie), Linda Marra (Steve), and Ginger Loverde (Patrick).
Richard is fondly remembered by his grandchildren Michael Wilson (Jeanne), Timothy Wilson (Ingrid), Kim Pettit (Kevin), Lori Todd (Michael), and Craig Pope (Ashley, and his step-grandchildren Eric Bluestein (Lauren), Brian Bluestein (Amanda), Ashley Bluestein, Stephanie Marra, Michaella Marra, Alex Loverde and Mitch Loverde.
His great-grandchildren will miss him; Nicole Wilson, Todd Wilson, Jessica Pettit, Skylar Wilson, Brady Wilson, Phoebe Wilson, Oliver Wilson, Tyler Todd, Peyton Todd, Benjamin Pope, William Pope and Maggie Bluestein.
He was loved and will be greatly missed by special family Pat and John David Strickland.
Visitation will be from 7 pm. - 9 pm. Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home, Brunswick.GA
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, October 5, 2011, in the chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home., with the Rev. Jay Hanson and the Rev. Craig Pope officiating.
Burial will follow at Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors.
Active Pallbearers will be Richard’s grandsons Michael Wilson, Timothy Wilson, Craig Pope, Michael Todd, Eric Bluestein, and Brian Bluestein.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men's Life Bible Study and Island Men's Bible Study, John David Strickland, Ronnie Bluestein, Dewayne Dimsdale, Don Taylor, Steve Reighard, Walt Hudley, Don Proctor, Bobby McGugan, and Dr. Marsha Certain.
