Richard A Hernandez, 99 of St. Simons Island passed away on October 30 at Hospice of the Golden Isles. He was born in Colombia, South America and is preceded in death by his wife of fifty-five years, Bernice Wright Hernandez of Bristol, Virginia, and oldest daughter Penelope Johannesen (Brian) of Falls Church, Virginia.
He is survived by daughter Maxine Smith (Billy) of St. Simons Island, and three granddaughters-Amanda Shortt of Newport News, Virginia; Kristen Glassick (Dan) of Fairfax, Virginia; and Melissa Johannesen of Winston-Salem, NC; Wil (Samantha) Smith and Krista Bradley of Reidsville, Georgia; and two great grandchildren, Aiden and Penelope Shortt of Newport News, Virginia. He had one sister and three brothers of Colombia.
He graduated with an associate’s degree in business from Virginia Highlands Community College, Abingdon, Virginia while living in Bristol. Richard and Bernice moved to Avondale Estates, Georgia in the eighties where he worked for Goodyear. They were very active with the square dancing clubs in the Atlanta Metro Area and attended various national conventions.
After moving to St. Simons Island he resided at Magnolia Manor and taught Spanish lessons to the residents.
He was a member of St. Simons Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
No service will be held at this time. Interment will be at Mountainview Cemetery in Bristol, Virginia where a small graveside service will be held next year.
