Rene A. Reyes passed away at his home Monday, February 29, 2016. Rene was born in Brownsville, Texas on October 19, 1969 to Miguel and Andrea U. Reyes. Quite early in his childhood he and his family moved to St. Simons Island, and Rene found his home.
Rene graduated Glynn Academy with the Bicentennial Class of 1988, and attended the University of Colorado at Boulder.
While at Glynn Academy, “I came home one day and Mom said I had to go to work!” Following his brothers, at age 14 he started at The Crab Trap Restaurant, and thus began a long career in food service management. He was a notable presence at Mullet Bay Seafood Restaurant, Brogen’s North, and Sal’s Pizzeria, among others.
Locally, Rene was a faithful member of St. Williams Catholic Church, and participated in the Island Players and the Brunswick Actors Theater, among other activities. More than these, however, it is impossible to overstate the importance of friendship. Rene was well-positioned to meet, and become friends with, countless people. He treated no friendship as “casual” and tirelessly gave of himself to those of us who remain so grateful to have known him. His open and welcoming manner endeared him to newcomers and old friends alike.
Rene (“of the Island Reyes’ - perhaps you’ve heard of me”) smiled. He smiled when he met you and when you parted. He was a true gentleman, and of such quick, intelligent wit and humor that his smile spread among all who met him.
Rene loved golf. He loved playing the game, dressing for the occasion, and talking about golf after the round and at every opportunity. He was a fan and supporter of UGA Football and the Dallas Cowboys, but golf was his sport.
“Brother Man” will be greatly missed, but at times like this, Rene would say, “Let me see your War Face!” In his memory, we will try to do just that.
Rene is pre-deceased by his Father, and survived by his Mother, along with brothers Rick (Noelia) Reyes, Oscar (Colleen) Reyes, sisters Becky Reyes (Steve Mollerberg) and Cis (Tony) Ojeda, nieces Amanda and Sarah, and nephews Michael and Nicholas, along with an extensive family.
The family will receive visitors Thursday evening, March 3, 2016 at Edo Miller Funeral Home between the hours of 6 and 8 pm with a rosary to be said at 7pm.
A Funeral Mass will be observed at St. Williams Catholic Church on St. Simons Island on Friday, March 4 at 11 AM. Honorary pallbearers will be Members of “The Chevy Crew”: Charlie Packard, Dade Brantley, David Fitzgerald, David Sullivan, Brent LaRoche, and friends, Jason Hyde, George Byer and Trey Parker.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests your continuing support of the youth golf programs of the Boys and Girls Club of St. Simons. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. www.edomillerandsons.com
