Born July 4, 1940, in Brunswick, Georgia to the late Franklin James and Marie B. Acosta. He was a 1958 graduate of Glynn Academy and a 1963 graduate of Auburn University with a B.S. in Industrial Management School of Engineering. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Acosta, and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Acosta.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary K. Acosta of St. Simons Island, a son, Jason Acosta and wife Carole of Forsyth, GA, a daughter, Michelle Acosta Santangelo and husband Will of Marietta, GA, four grandchildren, Zachary Acosta, Bradley Acosta, Caroline Santangelo, and Sophia Santangelo, a brother, Jimmy Acosta of Leesburg, GA, a sister-in-law Stephanie Acosta of Brunswick, GA, and several nieces and nephews.
Ray retired from Georgia Power as Coastal Region Manager after 38 years of service and his career included roles in McRae, Macon, Vidalia, Atlanta, and Brunswick.
He was passionate about community and economic development and served as Chairman of Brunswick and Glynn County Economic Development Authority and held leadership positions in Coastal Area District Development Authority, Georgia Ports Authority, Brunswick and Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce, and was an organizer and board member of First Bank of Brunswick, now Ameris Bank.
Ray was committed to service and served as President of United Way of Brunswick and Glynn County, President of Boys Club of Glynn, Chairman of College of Coastal Georgia Foundation, and Chairman of Brunswick Glynn County Water Resources Committee. He held leadership positions in many community service organizations including Okefenokee Area Council Boy Scouts, YWCA Foundation, Kiwanis Club of Brunswick, Salvation Army Advisory Board, and Rotary Club of Brunswick.
Ray was a member of St. William Catholic Church and enjoyed golfing, fishing, and spending time with his family.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 PM until 8 PM on Friday, July 8th at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at St. William Catholic Church at 11 AM Saturday, July 9th, with inurnment in the St. William Columbarium. A reception will follow.
