Born May 17, 1930, in Orlando, Fla., to the late Wade and Edith Thompson, she was a graduate of Glynn Academy and a lifelong resident of St. Simons Island. Her family meant the world to her, and loved spending time together. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, being outdoors and watching the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturdays with everyone.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ed Riggs; her sister, Donna Thompson; and her beloved daughter, Sherrill Gomez.
Survivors include her sons, Jere "Butch" Newton III (Sue) of Darien, Ga., and Ricki Riggs (Darci) of St. Simons Island, Ga.; her daughter, Gina Moran (Jack) of Brunswick; her grandchildren, Sandy Newton of St. Simons Island, Ga., Summer Ihde Whitten of St. Simons Island, Ga., April Ihde of Poulsbo, Wash., Wade Riggs of St. Simons Island, Ga., and Calli Riggs of St. Simons Island, Ga.; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and her most precious companion, her dog, Ziggy.
The family is thankful for her loving caregivers, her grandson, Sandy Newton, and his fiancée, Ashley Zanders.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the mausoleum at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens on St. Simons Island with the Rev. Darrell Joiner officiating. Entombment will follow.
