Mary Landen was born in Blue Island, Illinois to Olga and Louis Beaupré and grew up in Harvey, Illinois. She was an only child. Mary was raised during the Depression. She graduated from Thorton Township High School and attended Bryant & Stratton Business College in Chicago.
Mary was a Chicago-area jitterbug champion. Blond and petite, Mary was a real beauty, chosen to give the keys to the City of Harvey to fellow Harvey-denizen “Handsome Lou” Boudreau, the future Hall of Fame shortstop and manager.
Out of her many suitors, Mary chose a tall, lanky, somewhat taciturn Swede, Glenn Landen, to be her life-long companion and husband. Mary and Glenn were devoted to each other and to their two children, Paul and Carol.
Glenn’s job with Ford Motor Company brought them to Dearborn Michigan, where Mary was a very enthusiastic and well-versed tour guide for Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum. Mary joined Glenn and the kids on many weekends, and sometimes three-week cruises, on their sailboat “Enchantress,” docked in Sarnia Yacht Club.
Glenn retired in 1983 and Mary and Glenn moved to Saint Simons Island, Georgia. They fell in love with the special beauty of St. Simons – the live oaks and the Spanish moss -- the first time they set eyes on it. They built a great life in St Simons, with a caring group of friends. Mary loved Christ Church Frederica, serving for many years as a member of the Altar Guild. Mary had been an active volunteer in all of the church parishes in which she was a member. Her faith always guided her life.
Mary is survived by her son Paul, daughter-in-law Carolyn, grandson Ben and granddaughter Mary, son-in-law Mark and his wife Lisa, grandsons Robert and Steven and great-granddaughter Savanna. Mary was well-loved and will be dearly missed by all those who knew her.
Her funeral will be held on Friday November 18 at 10:00 in the sanctuary of Christ Church Frederica, 6329 Frederica Road, St Simons Island, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to Christ Church Frederica
