Marvin J. Highsmith, Sr., 85, of Brunswick, passed away Friday, November 16, 2012 at Hospice of the Golden Isles. The family will receive friends Monday, November 19, 2012 from 6-8 PM at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. A Graveside service will be held Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 11AM at Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. James Wigton and Rev. Jim Crandall officiating.
Marvin was born September 19, 1927 in Brunswick, Georgia to the late David Aaron Highsmith and Essie Cross Highsmith. He graduated from Glynn Academy, Perry Business School, Pittsburgh School of Watchmaking and John Marshall Law School. He owned Hy-Smith Jewelers for many years and served as clerk of Superior Court of Glynn County for 16 years, after which he returned to his love of creating custom jewelry. Marvin was a member of the Elks Club, Masonic Lodge and a member of First Baptist Church of Brunswick and served in many departments of the church. He was a volunteer fireman, as well as Glynn County Auxiliary Policeman. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as part of the occupational forces in Japan and was recalled to serve in combat in Korea. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and tending to his vegetable garden.
Along with his parents, Marvin is preceded in death by his brother: David Highsmith, Jr., and his sister: Ensel Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years: Bessie Highsmith of Brunswick; one son: Joe (Christie) Highsmith of St. Simons; one daughter: Cheryl (David) Melton of Middleburg, FL; three grandsons: Bubba (Kim) Highsmith of Valdosta, GA, Brent (Courtney) Highsmith of Richmond Hill, GA and Michael Leone of Ponte Vedra, FL; three granddaughters: Stephanie Leone and Amy Leone both of Ponte Vedra, FL and Jenny Highsmith of St. Simons Island, GA; five great grandchildren: Madison Highsmith and Parker Highsmith both of Valdosta, GA, Campbell Highsmith and Henry Highsmith both of Richmond Hill, GA and Gage Leone of Ponte Vedra, FL; he is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
