Joan Claxton Peterman, 93, of Saint Simons Island, Georgia, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, June 7th, 2022, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina. Mrs. Peterman was a native of Kite, Georgia and has resided on Saint Simons Island since 1982. She was the daughter of the late Alver Bemis Claxton, Sr. and the late Maude Mays Claxton. She was married for sixty four years to her loving husband Milton Peterman before his passing in 2016.
Mrs. Peterman attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia where she graduated with a B.A. Degree in History in 1951. After graduation, Mrs. Peterman began her teaching career in Warner Robins, Georgia. After her marriage in 1952, she had the opportunity to live and work with her family in a variety of locations across the Southeast, Ohio and Michigan as she and her husband both excelled to positions of increasing responsibility. While living on Saint Simons Island she taught third grade for nine years at C. B. Greer Elementary School in Brunswick. Her teaching career spanned 41 years and she taught all grades from 3rd through 12th.
Mrs. Peterman retired from teaching in 1992 and enjoyed spending her retirement with her husband, family, and friends. Traveling to Hawaii and Alaska and attending many Clemson University home football games were among her many favorite memories with her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mrs. Peterman was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Peterman; her mother and father, Maude Mays and Alver Bemis Claxton, Sr.; and four sisters, Alvis Melrose Claxton, Johnnie Claxton Colsen, Eddie Mae Claxton and Barbara Jane Claxton. She is survived by a daughter, Jayne Peterman Rohl (Thomas) of Simpsonville, SC and a brother, Alver B. Claxton, Jr. (Ann) of Powder Springs, GA.
Her family will receive friends at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 14th, 2022, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The funeral service to celebrate her life will follow the visitation at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with Reverend Slade Johnson officiating. The committal service will be held graveside at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, June 15th, 2022, at the Magnolia Park Cemetery in Warner Robins, Georgia. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made in her memory to the charity of your choice.
