James was born on January 4, 1935 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania the son of the late James A. and Mary Sprague. He spent his early childhood years in Marietta, Ohio before his family moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He graduated from Ft. Lauderdale High School and also attended Kiski Junior College. James served his country honorably in the United States Air Force. After his military service he joined the American National Bank in Jesup, Georgia in the loan division. While located in Jesup, he was a member of several civic and service groups. He was a true leader and served as Vice President of the Rotary Club, President of the United Fund, President of the local American Cancer Society, and President of the local Jaycees. In 1974, James transferred to the American National Bank in Brunswick, Georgia to serve as Vice President in the installment loan department. The bank was later acquired by Barnett Bank and James later retired with Barnett Bank. After his retirement, James as a contract compliance officer for First Georgia Bank. He was a member of the Saint Simons United Methodist Church and was a member of the local Rotary Club.
James was a major driving force in bringing Hospice of The Golden Isles to Brunswick. He served as Chairman of the Steering Committee and later volunteered his time at Hospice of The Golden Isles.
James was preceded in death by his parents James A. and Mary Sprague; a sister, Martha Eleanor Spague Fullen; one brother, Lindsay Hammond Eve, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife, Jutta Sprague of Brunswick, GA; a daughter, Judy Crouch (Al Crouch) of St Simons Island, GA; one son, Eric Sprague (Medea Carter) of Tallahassee, FL. Four grandchildren, one great grandchild, several Nieces and nephews also survive.
James loved to spend time with his family and friends. He was an avid reader. He had a love for music and was a talented organist. James also enjoyed traveling and love the outdoors.
The family cordially invites you to attend the memorial service to honor his life on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Saint Simons United Methodist Church. A reception will follow the service. Pastor Marcia Cochran will officiate the service.
