Jackie Davis, 77, died at home on St. Simons Island September 12, 2021 from complications of Dementia, under the care of Hospice of the Golden Isles – and assisted by a team of eight family friends who were making previously planned renovations to Jackie’s home.
Born in Douglas, Georgia to Jackie and Buddy Hasell on October 16, 1943, she was pre-deceased by her loving parents and sister Barbara Murrah; her Uncle C.K. and Aunt Rosa Boland; Uncle Lloyd and Aunt Catherine Bruce Grider; and Uncle Luie and Aunt Willie Wisenbaker. Also, her first cousins David Boland Sr., Dr. Douglas Bruce, and Lewis "Sonny" Wisenbaker III.
Jackie is survived by her loving husband of 53 years Dave, son John, grandson Cameron, brother Nat Hasell IV, brother-in-law Bascom Murrah, sister-in-law Dawn Cram; and first cousins Jim Bruce, Rosalind Griffin and Vicki Ream.
As a daughter of an Eastern Airlines pilot, Jackie grew up in Charlotte, Atlanta, Jacksonville and Miami. She spent holidays and summers on her beloved St. Simons Island with grandparents Capt. Doug and Alberta Gould Hasell Taylor, her Aunts Rosa, Kitty, Willie, and numerous cousins.
Attending the University of Miami and graduating from Georgia Southern College (now Georgia Southern University) with a degree in elementary education, and later earning a Master's in Reading and Literacy at Florida State University, Jackie taught school in Miami, Lantana, and Tallahassee, Florida before health issues required her to retire in 1980. For the next 35 years, Jackie enthusiastically volunteered in Tallahassee as a hospital “pink lady”, and as a children’s ministry teacher and director. She also volunteered on St. Simons at Christ Church and at her sister Barbara’s Oatland North retirement farm for animals.
For the past 16 years, Jackie was an attentive, loving grandparent of grandson Cameron Davis.
The bedrock of Jackie’s entire life was The Trinity, from whom she gained constant strength, guidance and comfort. Religion and church were Jackie’s most precious pursuits, shaped by generations of her family’s devotion to religion and service at Christ Church Frederica, St. Simons Island.
Jackie’s relatives and friends knew her as giving to others, avoiding recognition for good deeds, living her faith, and smiling.
Despite physical discomfort every day for over 50 years, Jackie more than did her share of good works in the service of God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, her community, and her family. Jackie’s was truly a life well lived.
Because of Covid restrictions, a private funeral service limited to 50 family members and Jackie’s longtime friends will be held in the yard of Christ Church and livestreamed on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at 10:30 am, the Very Reverend Tom Purdy, Rector; and Associate Rector The Reverend Ashton Williston presiding. She will then be buried alongside her grandparents, parents and loving sister Barbara.
Donations in Jackie’s name may be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525 or Christ Church Frederica, 6329 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island, GA 31522.
The family gives thanks for the expertise, advice and kindness of many doctors, nurses and medical support staff on the fifth and sixth floors of the Brunswick Hospital; at Magnolia Manor; and Hospice of the Golden Isles. Special thanks to eight workers making renovations to Jackie’s home who doubled as experienced loving caregivers.
