Hugh Conway Moore

Born in Onley, VA in 1920, he moved to St. Simons in 1926 when his father was hired to supervise the construction of the original Sea Island Golf Course and then served as its first golf professional. He graduated from Albany High School in 1939 and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. He played minor league baseball for two years before enlisting in the Navy, serving four years aboard the USS Nevada and participating in the invasion of France on D-Day.

Hugh was the golf pro at Bowden Golf Course in Macon for eighteen years before moving to Brunswick in 1961 where he was the Pro-Superintendent at Brunswick Country Club for twenty years. After retirement, he worked for the Sea Island Golf Club for fifteen years and gave private golf lessons until shortly before his death. He was well known for his teaching skills and ability to grow beautiful greens, and served on the Greens Advisory Committee at Augusta National Golf Course.

Hugh won the Georgia Open in 1956 and the International Fourball Pro-Am in Scotland, Senior Division several times. He also won the Senior Division at Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 1978 and took many local golfers to numerous pro-ams all over the world. He enjoyed his friends and family and sought to serve God and his country. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church and served as junior high Sunday School teacher for over 12 years.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Faye Simpson Moore of Brunswick; sons Terry Moore of Riverview, FL and Stan Moore (Bonnie) of Tifton; daughter Janice Applegate (Steve) of St. Simons Island; grandsons Bryan Moore (Kelly) of Tifton, David Moore (Rachael Dawn) of Brunswick, Kip Moore of Nashville, TN; granddaughters Kristen Bowerman (Scott) of Brunswick, Julie Hargrave (Zander) of Laurel, NY; Melissa Moye (Richie) of Louisville, KY; Joanna Williams (Trey) of Atlanta; Jennifer Moore and Mallory Moore of Tifton; six great-grandchildren; sister Winifred “Boozie” Knox of Albany; brother-in-law Chester Green of Nashville, TN, eleven nieces and nephews, and step-grandson Joe Applegate (Lane) of St. Simons. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Green and Ursula Long.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 2 at 11:00 at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Soper and Rev. Rick Turner officiating. A private entombment will follow at Brunswick Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors at Edo Miller an hour before the service.

Pallbearers will be Carroll Martin, Jack Welch, Howard McCandless, John Tuten, Charles Hoffman, and Dr. Chuck Long.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Marsha Certain, Dr. Jack Amie, Dr. Scott Tarplee, Dr. Abraham Cheong, Marshall Gorrie, Bob Jamieson, Wade Carruth, Brannen Veal, Clint Crosby, Jim Seaver, Albert Shelander, Steve Pittman, Ed Blanton, Bill Brunson, Paul Morrison, John Laws, Clarence Roberts, John Teltsch, Bruce Vanderbeck and Jack Laughlin.
