On the eve of Dec. 14 after a long, courageous battle with cancer, Hubert “Hugh” Baggett, 91, went peacefully to be with the Lord. Born in Cumberland City, Tennessee, on April 19, 1933, Hugh graduated from W.T. Thomas High School.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years Courtney Baggett; three children, Pamela Cason, Brunswick, Angie Baggett, St. Simons Island, and Hugh Alan Baggett, Atlanta; stepchildren, Harold Moore Jr. (Rachel) and Terri Jones; grandchildren, Ashley Gibblets (Mike), Andy James, Courtney Kelly (Eric) and Chelsea Smith (Blake); 11 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Linda Baggett and Corrine Baggett, along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leona H. Parchman and Adam W. Baggett; siblings, Berry S. Baggett, Tony E. Baggett, Joyce Odham and Jane Kondwros; sons-in-law, Kerry Cason and Wendell Adams; and grandson, Hunter Moore.
A superior athlete, upon graduation Hugh was drafted by the AAA Milwaukee Braves baseball team as a southpaw pitcher. After a stint in baseball, he proudly served in the United States Army in Fort Lee, Virginia. Following his military service, he went to work for Chevron Oil Co. In 1968, he was relocated to Brunswick as SE District Sales Manager. Hugh loved this area, and enjoyed golfing, fishing, and hunting. He knew all the rivers from the Satilla to the Hampton.
In 1975, Hugh, in partnership with Chevron, opened Baggett’s Convenience Store at the newly opened Interstate 95 and Coastal Hwy. 17 intersection. At the time, it was the sole fueling stop at this new Gateway to the Golden Isles. Eventually buying the property, for the next 20 years, everyone knew Hugh from “The Store.” Over those years, he made many friends with locals and travelers alike.
In retirement, Hugh continued his outdoor interests. He golfed well into his late eighties and was proud of the small role he played in “The Legend of Bagger Vance.” He developed a passion for vegetable gardening and loved sharing his harvest with family and friends. He liked riding around the neighborhood in his golf cart dispensing his humor and wit to the neighbors. He loved watching the Braves and UGA football games. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with family and being “Papa” to the grands. He had a close relationship with Jesus and was a member of Northside Baptist Church.
Forever remembered for his kindness and generosity, he will be immeasurably missed by those who love him.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28 at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home, 3321 Glynn Ave., in Brunswick. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The American Cancer Society.
